Umpiring In The Western Region Football
League:
An increasing number of young people, male and female,
are choosing to be part of our great game as field,
boundary or goal umpire. Umpiring is exciting, fun,
great for fitness, and offers the best seat in the
house!
The Western Region Football League is
able to provide a significant amount of assistance for
those seeking to become an umpire & are ready to provide
coaching, training, education and accreditation by
qualified, accredited umpires’ coaches. Umpiring is also
a paid position, with both Saturday & Sunday fixtures
available. The league welcomes males & females, former
players, current players, even those without any playing
experience. For more
information call the WRFL on 9315 5400.
Umpiring Roles Available Within The WRFL:
Field Umpires: A challenging
and rewarding activity, field umpires take control of 36
players and call the shots on the big stage! The field
umpiring career path involves three progressive stages,
with the pinacle being umpiring at AFL level.
Boundary Umpires: For those
who enjoy running or want to learn about the game,
boundary umpiring is ideal. Boundary umpires are
responsible for making decisions to whether the ball is
in play, as well performing the boundary throw-in . VFL
State League Senior Squad boundary umpires officiate in
all AFL Melbourne based matches.
Goal Umpires: The goal umpire
decides on, and records, all scores in an Australian
football match. The goal umpire career path provides a
chance to umpire at AFL level, as VFL State league
Senior Squad goal umpires officiate in all AFL Melbourne
based matches.
Umpiring Opportunities: (By
Ryan Webster, 14 Yrs)
In 2011 I decided to take up umpiring
within the WRFL. When I decided to do this, I didn't
really know what was involved. I'd been playing footy
since Under 9's & that helped, at least I knew the
rules. I was 13 years old when I started. I attended an
information seminar where we were told that umpiring was
a great opportunity to be involved in footy from a
different perspective, make new friends, grow in
confidence & be paid for it.
I started off by attending one of the WRFL's Umpiring
Academies at MacKillop College on Monday nights where I
was given a green uniform & taught the basics. The one
fear I had was that I'd be on my own & find it all a
little daunting. I was pleased to know that was never
going to happen as there is a mentoring program in place
where experienced umpires give their time to assist new
umpires. Initially my mentor came out on the ground with
me & as I gradually gained in confidence & experience
his role lessened & he'd then talk to me at the breaks &
always look to encourage me.
During the course of the season I found I picked things
up pretty quickly & as I got to know many of the senior
umpires my confidence grew due to the way in which they
all made me feel welcome. I was pleasantly surprised to
find myself umpiring finals games in my first season,
but at the same time felt confident knowing what I'd
been taught would stand me in good stead.
Getting involved in umpiring is something I am really
pleased about. I get to remain involved in sport,
continue to learn new skills, be involved with a
fantastic group of people & importantly I get paid for
doing something I enjoy. If you're thinking about
becoming an umpire, then I would certainly encourage you
to do it.
